The latest technology involves computers and a wireless network being used to capture information on bird hazard hotspots around the airfield. The information is available to staff through a reporting engine on the airport's intranet.

The system, implemented by the airport team alongside ClickAirport, went live in July and has already reduced the paper mountain associated with compiling reports into bird hazards.

The importance of such technology is borne out in figures showing bird strikes cost the industry €2billion annually.

ClickAirport Managing Director Richard Atkinson said: "Aviation has always been at the forefront of improving safeguarding, but recent increases in publiuc awareness of airfield hazards need to be addressed with a step change in risk management. The current air traffic numbers offer the perfect opportunity to invest in safety initiatives before the movements increase and the number of incidents rises with it."

Richard Moore, Bristol International IT manager, said: "While most airports are primarily looking at the benefits of new technologies to the passenger and terminal-based staff, we are committed to reviewing their use for all manner of benefits."
