THE BENEFITS OF WIRELESS FOD MANAGEMENT
The 6th ACI Europe Airport Operations Seminar and Exhibition was held on the 29-31 October 2003 in Athens.
A range of topics were covered, from Bird Control to Foreign Object Debris with respected speakers from organisations such as QinetiQ, Scarecrow, NH Bird Management, NAFPI and London Heathrow. Following on from an update of the problem of FOD and, in particular, what the UK Ministry of Defence is doing about it, ClickAirport's then Managing Director, Richard Atkinson, presented the benefits of using wireless technology to manage FOD. The presentation took the delegates back to the basics of airfield and risk management theory so that the benefits could be understood in context. Real examples were used from our clients where possible.
The presentation concluded with the announcement of the measured results from one airport. Compared with the previous paper-based data recording, up to four times the amount of data was being captured with the ClickAirport system (as measured over a 3 month period). As well as there being a greater level of data throughput, the quality of the data was deemed to have been far greater because the users answer prompts-leaving no room for incomplete records or unreadable entries. Ultimately it is impossible to say whether the systems have helped to avoid incidents, but it has been shown that five times the number of causal factors were identified. With the facilitation of the airport's safety management cycle, these factors become the starting points for investigations leading, in some cases, to mitigating actions.
